2024 District 141 Committee Conference
June 10 – 13, 2024
First, I would like to thank the Members of Local Lodge 2319 for sending myself, Cheryl, Ted, Dewan and Steve to this Conference which benefits the Committees of the IAM. The information that we received from this Conference makes us better IAM Members so we can serve and teach our Members of the IAM.
Monday the 10th. was arrival day at Planet Hollywood in LAS with registration in the afternoon. We then had the Meet and Greet from 6pm to 10pm, this is the best time to catch up with other Committee’s from other stations and other airlines. This is a great time to forge new friendships and alliances to help with future issues.
Tuesday the 11th. was the opening of the Conference at 9am. Local Lodge 845 LAS President Vicky Schoening welcomed us to LAS. Michael Klemm our President and Directing General Chair made the opening comments to start the Conference. Michael made statements on the Airlines that are cover under the umbrella of District 141. Michael stated that United and America will be negotiating contracts at the same time, he did state that American will probably finish theirs first. United is in a full Section 6 and will take time to complete but did highlight 401K % increase, reduced pay scales, job protection’s and pay raises. Michael also mentioned that our Members of the IAM need to stick together as the IAM vs. The Company. The next speaker was Richie Johnsen who is the IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President. Richie spoke about the New Member Program that will be coming out soon. He also wants to have either a yearly or every 2 years survey sent out to the Members for their feedback on the IAM. His last statement was and if you have been reading this, you have probably noticed I have not used the word Union. Richie wants us to transition saying the IAM with the focus on I AM. The next speaker was Tom Reagan who is the IAM Airline Coordinator (the Contract Negotiator Wizard). Tom spoke and had a presentation with all the numbers for the airlines (way too much to include here) but he very positive that the contracts will work out in the long run to benefit the Members. Then next was Hasan Solomon who is the IAM National Political and Legislative Director. He is a very dynamic speaker but above all, he is our major voice in Washington DC. His catch line is “If we are not at the table then we are on the menu” this means either at the Negotiations table or at the Election box. We need to get involved, it is our future!!!!! The Airline business is the most Government regulated job there is. We cannot hope that the Government make the right decision; we need to let them know to make the right decision… GET INVOLVED!!! This Ended the Morning Session. In the afternoon we broke up into our Airline Groups and just had question and answer time.
Wednesday the 12th. Michael Klemm opened the Morning with going back over briefly yesterday’s issues where he had a few corrections to clear some items up. Our first speaker of the day was our MNPL (Machinists Non-Partisan Political League) Legislative Director, David Roderick. Please think about donating to this fund, NO money comes from your Dues, it only comes from members donations. All this money goes to fighting for our rights as workers in this Country. He was followed by the Media/Communication Team which headed by Eric. He spoke about AI in our work place now and more coming. We need to very careful of our Social Media Post and when you are posting, at work is not a good time to do that since each company has the own Social Media team that watches for posting during working hours. Then we ended up with the Safety Team, United Airline Bill Salo, American Airlines/Spirit Airlines Dennis Spencer and Hawaiian Airlines Kuulei McGuire. The main topic of course was Safety, with the big reason of course we all want to go home after our shift is over. Please report all violations that you see that the Company is not abiding by.
Thursday the 13th, was again opened by Michael Klemm, which spoke about improvement of the IAM. We started off with Community Service with Christine Odoardi, she spoke about Service to the Community. Schools, neighborhoods, shelters, and other community centers are learning about the culture and values of our union through your outreach. We are creating friends and expanding the role of unions beyond the workplace! Next up was Bryan Hutchinson with the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The IAM EAP offers free, professional, and confidential help for members and their families when a personal problem develops that may affect their job performance. Our EAP staff and volunteer Coordinators can help you with resources in the community to address your situation and develop a plan of action to meet your needs. Last up was Mike “Mac” McGovern for Education. The District 141 Education Department is dedicated to providing our members a greater understanding of how our union works and ensuring that our Union Stewards are as highly trained as possible. Michael Klemm closed the Conference with saying “IAM strong and IAM safe”. He Thanked all of us for coming and to make sure we spread the information with everyone at home.
Thanks again to everyone,
Anthony (Tony) Cotoia
