Leadership II Training

Last month I had the privilege to attend Leadership II training. While there I was able to meet other brothers and sisters from around the country even a few of our Canadian siblings were in attendance. The one thing we all had in common in the class was a mutual support for one another….SOLITARY!

I learned so much about how our Union lobbys on our behalf to get legislation passed requiring corporate accountability….hopefully resulting in fair labor practices. This training included a trip to Capitol Hill. Although the weather was cold and wet, I was so thrilled to be there! I was able to drop off literature on bills supported by the IAM to Sen. Rick Scott’s office. I left information with the Staff of Representatives Kathy Castor and Maxwell Frost. Thank you for the opportunity. It is my hope to get more involved with the MNPL arm of the IAM.

United Steward Summit

This year United Steward Summit was one for the books. I really enjoyed learning and spending time with my fellow stewards. I enjoyed all the guest speakers. We had speakers from Our pension plan, Safety, Fmla, Lawyers, Congress. Each person was very knowledgeable in their field. And they didn’t mind the questions that were asked. They keep it very entertaining. Our very own Tony Gibson keeps us on our toes with the different twist he will throw in an assignment. I can’t wait until the next summit.

Leadership III Training

In September I had the opportunity to attend Leadership III Training at the Winpisinger Educational Center. I want to first thank my local for allowing me to attend.
Every training you always learn something new, and always a different experience. I was fascinated to learn how the IAM, the UAW( United Auto Workers) and the USW(United Steelworkers) proposed a Unification which would have made this one of the largest Unions in America. Even though the unification didn’t get past, knowing they tried was history in the making.

Leadership classes just isn’t about the airline workers, the IAM is a diverse labor union that is made up of aerospace, manufacturing companies, automotive industries and government agencies to name a few. We all have our own labor laws as well.

Thanks again for this opportunity in my learning education of how to be a better Steward to be able to assist my peers.
